Introduction Part
India has nearly 90,000 types of animals including over 350 mammals, 1200 bird species and 50,000 species. Many of these are only found on this subcontinent. These include the Asian Elephant, Bengal Tiger, Asiatic Lion, Indian rhino and several types of monkeys.
From all these mammals; first we start our safari with largest mammal on the land "An Elephant"

Physical Characteristics
- In general, Asian elephants are small in size compare to African elephants and have highest body point on the head.
- Indian elephants reach a shoulder height of between 2 m to 3.5 m (6.6 to 11.5 ft.), weight between 2,000 to 5,000 Kg (4,000 to 11,000 lb.) and have 19 pairs of ribs.
- Indian elephants have smaller ears, but relatively broader skulls and larger trunks than African elephants. Toes are large and broad.
- Unlike their African cousins, their abdomen is proportionate with their body weight but African elephants have a lager abdomen as compare to their skulls.
- One elephant eats 150 kg of food and 150 gallons of water every day.

1. The Periyar National Park, Kerala
- The Periyar National Park, Kerala is the only national park in South India as well as in India that has an artificial lack flowing through the forests. Located on the evergreen hills of Western Ghats.
2. Bandipur National Park, Karnataka
- The Bandipur National Park is the most popular among all the national parks in South India. It is a natural home to Elephants and several other endangered species. Lush forest of the Deccan Plateau and the Western Ghats make this park one of the beautiful park in India.
- The park is located 80 km away from Mysore and almost 215 km away from Bangalore.
3. Kaziranga National Park, Assam
- Kaziranga national park is located at the Golaghat district of Assam. Kaziranga National Park is one of the largest wildlife sanctuaries to explore the wildlife of Northeast India.
- It is also a highly visited park among top 10 national parks of India.
- With Asiatic Elephants, this park consists of One Horned Rhinos, tigers, Wild Buffaloes, Swamp deer and a large number of migratory birds during the winter.
4. Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Karnataka
- Enveloped by both dry and moist deciduous forests and also semi evergreen forests, the Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is a must-visited place.
- There are a number of animals like bison, gaur, Asiatic Elephants, tiger, Sambar, boar, deer etc..
- It is a hub of wildlife explorers and photographers.
Steps taken by Government to protect the Asian Elephants
- Project Elephant was launched in 1992 by the government of India Ministry of Environment and Forests to provide financial and technical of wildlife management efforts by states for their free ranging population of wild Asian elephants.
- Objective of "Project Elephant "are
- To protect elephants, their habitats and corridors
- To address issues of man-animal conflicts.
- Welfare of captive elephants.
- Project Elephants provides financial and technical supports to major elephants bearing states in the country. This project is mainly implemented in 16 states viz. Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, Meghalaya, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal.
