In our journey of Indian Safari, we reach to one of the heavy weight champion "The Gaur- Indian Bull"



Introduction




  • The Indian Bison also known as Gaur is the tallest and largest cattle species in the world, even bigger than the African wild Buffalo with occasional large bull weighting up to 1,500 kg.
  • The Gaur belongs to the group of wild oxen that include the Asiatic Buffalo, African buffalo, true cattle and Bison.

Where we can see this Gaur in India


1. Bandhipur National Park



  • This park is located in the southern Karnataka area of Chamarajanagar district. It is a one of the important Tiger reserves in India. It has a total area of about 874 km. It is a beautiful tourist spot in Karnataka and one of the best wildlife sanctuaries in India.
  • It was set up in 1931 and later converted in to a National Park in 1973.  


2. Nagarhole National Park


  • Nagarhole National Park is one of the famous parks in Karnataka.
  • It is also known as "Rajiv Gandhi National Park".
  • It is situated 94 km from Mysore in Karnataka.
  • It was set up in 1955 and later converted into a National Park in 1988.
  • Many rare species like Asiatic Elephant, Tigers are found abundantly in this park.



3. Mudumalai National Park



  • Mudumalai National Park is located in the north-western side of Nilgiri District of the westernmost part of Tamilnadu.
  • It is a one of the first wildlife sanctuaries in established in India.
  • This park is one of the famous Tiger Reserve in India.
  • Apart from tigers, many rare species like Indian Leopard, Jungle cats, Sloth Bear are found in this region.


Conservation efforts

  • Indian Bison is listed in CITES Appendix I. South and Central India have a well established network of wildlife refugees and protection activities, to large extent.
  • In many sanctuaries their populations are monitored periodically. Many steps are taken by the government to save this species.
  • Hunting the Indian Bison is an offense and severe punishment will be given to the poachers.
