Denmo- The Himalayan Bear

Most of the people know about Grizzly  bear but very less people know about "Denmo- The Himalayan Bear".





Introduction

  • The Himalayan Brown Bear, also known as the Himalayan red bear, isabelline bear or Dzu-Teh, is a subspecies of the brown bear.

Physical Characteristics


  • Himalayan brown bears exhibit sexual dimorphism.

  • Males range from 1.5m to 2.2m long, while females are 1.37m to 1.83m long.

  • They are the largest mammals in the Himalayas and are usually sandy or reddish-brown in colour. 
  • The life expectancy for the Himalayan brown bear is around 20-25 years and around 45 years in captivity.

Distribution


  • The bears are found in Nepal, Tibet, West China and North India, North Pakistan and South-East Kazakhstan.
  • They are already speculated to have become extinct in Bhutan.




Food Habitat


  • Himalayan Brown Bears are omnivores and will eat grasses, roots and other plants as well as insects and small mammals.

  • They also like fruits and berries. They will also prey on large mammals, including sheep and goats.
  • Adults will eat before sunrise and later during the afternoon.

Some Interesting Facts


  • The Jammu and Kashmir wildlife department has recorded its first ever sighting of a group of eight Himalayan Brown Bears in Kargil's  Drass sector, where the 1999 war had wreaked havoc with their habitats.

  • There are currently 65 brown bears in the Deosai National Park which is in Pakistan.

  • The bears are extremely fast and can run up to 35mph. 
  • The Himalayan Brown Bear formally known as "Dzu-tech" Nepalese term, has also been associated with the legend of the Yeti, or Abominable snowman.


Conservation Status
  • The IUCN list Himalayan Brown Bears as vulnerable, and they are listed under schedule-1of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act of 1972.
