Kharai Camels - The Ship of Sea

We all know about camels.....


From the past, humans are using camels as a best travelling vehicle of desert......


We all know camel as "The Ship of Desert"

But now, we are going to meet a species of camel that can swim in the water and also know as "The Ship of Sea".

Yes, I am talking about "The Kharai Camels - The Ship of Sea".




Introduction

  • In India, two type of  species of camel are lived in Gujarat State.
  • One type of species is Kuchchhi Camel. Just like ordinary camel we see in desert.
  • But second type of species is Kharai Camel, This camel can walk on sandy land of desert and also can swim in deep water of sea.


Physical Characteristics

  • The Kharai Camels have medium body size compare to Kachchhi Camels. Their back side is slightly round.
  • Their head is large compare to Kachchhi camels and neck is thick.
  • They have erect ears with tip slightly curved inside and more wool on ears.
  • Their chest pad are small and short.
  • Body colour is mostly brown-white mix (Chavaro) and dark black.
  • Legs are large and thin, foot pads are medium compare to Kuchchhi Camels. Tail is short.
  • Upper shape is Bowel, Round and Pendulous just like Kuchchhi Camel.



Population

  • Population: Less than 10,000, The breed population has declined drastically.
  • Hot Fact: Forest department says Kharai Camel grazing destroys mangroves, while rearers claim the breed helps in seed dispersal.

Interesting Facts about Kharai Camels

  • Khari camels are an eco-tonal breed, as they survive in a dry land ecosystem as well as in a costal ecosystem, and can easily swim in deep sea.
  • They are less affected by common skin disease such as Khaji or dermatitis.
  • They can excellently feed and digest on saline trees and shrubs.
  • They can tolerate water with high TDS (Total dissolved Solid) up to 10,000 ppm.
  • Their short chest pad does not touch the forelegs while they walk.
  • They have smooth and long hair, which can be used for the preparation of the soft cloths.
