General Information 

  • Ladakh, also called as "Land of High Passes" is a region in Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir.
  • Since 1974, the government of India has successfully encouraged tourism in Ladakh.
  • The largest town of Ladakh is Leh, followed by Kargil.
  • The best place to see wildlife in Ladakh is to visit Hemis National Park.

Wild Life in Ladakh

  • The ibex is found in high craggy terrain of Europe, North Africa and Asia, and numbers several thousand in Ladakh: trekkers often spot them.
  • The Bharal or "Blue Sheep" is even more common, ranging in Himalayas from Ladakh east as far as Sikkim.
  • The Tibetian urial sheep is a rare goat found at lower elevations, mostly in river valleys.
  • The Tibetan antelope is also endangered. Early in the 20th centaury the Chiru was seen in herds of thousands, surviving in remarkably sparse vegetation, but they are vanishingly rare now.
  • The snow leopard once ranged throughout the Himalaya, Tibet and as far as the Sayan Mountains on the Mongolian-Russian border and in elevation from 1800m to 5400m.
  • They are extremely shy and hard to spot, even not well known.
  • It is believed, there are about 200 in Ladakh.


  • Other cats in Ladakh are even rarer than snow leopard: the Lynx, numbering only a few individuals and the Pallas's cat, which looks somewhat like a house cat.

  • The Tibetian Wolf is the greatest threat to the livestock of the Ladakhis. 
  • There are also a very few brown bears in the Suru valley and the area around Dras. The red fox is common, and Tibetian sand fox has recently been discovered in this region.

Best Time To reach Ladakh
  • Best time to visit Ladakh is from June until September, this region summer season.
  • At this time, Ladakh is an unmatched heaven, with patent, stunning views and warm and sunny weather. The average temperature range during the day is about 20 degree Celsius to 30 degree Celsius.
  • Anyone visiting Ladakh, even in the middle of summer, should be prepared for the sharp drop in temperatures at night.
