Fact About Red Panda

  • Despite their name, red pandas aren't actually closely related to giant pandas, but it wasn't until the last ten to fifteen years that scientists settled upon just where red pandas fit on the evaluation tree of life. It was clear that red pandas were member of the taxonomic "infraorder" Arctoidea, placing them in group with the bears, pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, walrus), raccoons.


Where we can see these red pandas in India

  • Three major national parks with known red panda population are Khangchendzonga National Park, Neora Valley National Park, Singalila National Park.


1. Neora Valley National Park


  • This park is situated in the unexplored terrains of Kalimpong Hills, the untouched natural forests and dense bamboo groves of Neora Valley give shelter to many endangered species that are protected in this area.
  • To reach this park, you have to reach Lava (34 km from Kalimpong), which is the nearest village. From there take a jeep ride to the national park, which is because of bad roads.


2. Khangchendzonga National Park




  • One of the highest biosphere reserve in the world, the Khangchendzonga national Park is a home to several endangered species.
  • To reach this park, you will have to hire a shared cab from Gangtok. The closest airport is in Bagdogra and the nearest rail head is New Jalpaiguri, Siliguri Junction (221km away).


3. Singalila National Park


  • The Singalila National Park had the highest density of Red Pandas in India, until a major forest fire swept through the park in March, 2006. After that only 20 to 26 of these species were left in the area, giving rise to project Red Panda for their reintroduction to wild from captive breeding.
  • To reach Singalila National Park, start your journey from Siliguri to Tonglu via Kurseong. The nearest railway station is Ghoom, 31km away from Tonglu. Bagdogra is the nearest airport to the National Park.
